I'm listening in the 31 meter band on shortwave radio right now. Yeah, the applause sounds canned. But it's coming in great, and I seem to be able to understand most of it, despite it being in Japanese. This is nice- like listening to baseball on the radio!

Subject: [sumo] Question for tv viewers
Hi all,
I recently discontinued my NHK subscription and, instead, watch the Sjmo Highlights program on NHK World. Has anyone else noticed, and is it true also on the NHK subscription live sumo channel, that the applause seems canned? It’s just so unlike any type of audience feat icon I’ve ever heard before on live TVJapan NHK or NHK World.
This is not a criticism; I grew up with canned applause and laughter on so many tv sitcoms . It’s just weird, especially if it’s supposed to be for the viewers’ benefit and not for the rikishi.
Thanks,
Barbara
