Subject: [Sumo news] - Kimarite-winning techniques
To: Sumo Newsletter2 <sumo-newsletter2 at googlegroups.com>
Tomorrow. Aki 2002 starts tomorrow. Abi is out due to injury.
We're going to be on the lookout for rare kimarites this basho, it seems.
In 1955 there were 68 kimarites. In 1960, they expanded to 70. In 2001, 12
were added, and we currently have 82. Additionally, three non-kimarite were
added to the then existing 2, so now there are 5 non-kimarite (where you
lose to yourself inadvertently) - Isamiashi, koshikudake, tsukite,
tsukihiza, and fumidashi. There are three kimarites which have never been
used since 1955: Kakezori (hooking backwards body drop) , Shumokuzori (bell
hammer backwards body drop), and Sototasukizori. NHK announcers will be
looking out for the kimarites, especially those that have not been used in
Makuuchi yet in the Reiwa era. There are 25 of these.
Some bouts can even be seen, some kimarites with relevant photos.
