Takasago beya's Asabenkei
<https://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?shikona=asabenkei&heya=-1&shusshin=-1&b=-1&high=-1&hd=-1&entry=-1&intai=-1&sort=1>(Sandanme
79) has retired after 17 years in sumo. Did an 8 basho stint in Juryo but
as usual, injuries killed his career. He had surgery, but to no avail and
will leave the Kyokai and join a company that intends to cater to tourists
and do sumo tours."I'll always be a sumo and Takasago fan. I am very happy
to have been a part of a great heya, and I thank the ex-shisho (ex-Asashio
RIP) and the current Takasago (he was Asasekiryuu's tsukebito back in the
day). My only regret is that I won't be able to see the young guys
growing..," he said, and left. He was famous for doing butsugari, lending
his chest to other rikishi and doing it quite well. So well than whenever
Naruto beya or Takekuma beya came for degeiko both Oyakata would ask
Asabenkei to do butsugari (lending the chest to other rikishi during
practice, usually at the end of the session, a very grueling part of
training), and guys like Gounoyama and Oushouma got stronger under his
guidance. Rather than forcing the rikishi to push for a long period of
time, the assessed each guy's strength, allowed them to exert all their
strength in the final push, and gave accurate advice on how to push to
maximize their strength. "It makes me happy that I was a part of them
getting strong. I made no personal gain from that. To me, they were all
some cute juniors.." he said.
